Cape St Vincent has a important place in the history of portugal because the Battle of Cape St Vincent (14 February 1797) a British fleet under John Jervis defeated a larger Spanish fleet under Jose de Cordoba near Cape St. Vincent, Portugal.

This place is actually Europe's most south westerly point, and hence known as the "Land's End" of Portugal.

The cape is an important shipping landmark ,also the lighthouse which is sometimes open to the public is at watching distance of 50 miles away.

1797 was an important year - the battle of St. Vincent in February was one of the Royal Navy's greatest victories achieved in this year, there was a time when the navy passed through a serious crisis of fleet mutinies . 1797 also saw the rise to fame of Horatio Nelson, due to whose dedication at the Battle of Cape St. Vincent secured victory.
